1.Pedal Power

This is my last column for Australian Cyclist before handing the baton to Omar Khalifa, the new CEO of Bicycle NSW, pictured with me, above. As I write, I am reminded of how wonderful it has been to be involved in bicycling in Australia for the past four years.

2.Committed to building a great place to ride

These are eventful times in the world of cycling. Bicycle NSW has just formed a strategic alliance with Cycling NSW, the governing body for cycling competitions in the state. We agreed to work closely together on a number of projects, including our schools' program.

3.Putting the pedal to the mettle!

The year started with the Santos Tour Down Under in South Australia which delivered a massive blast of energy and a real shot in the arm for cycling in Australia. My annual pilgrimage to Adelaide to witness the event and participate in the Mutual Community Challenge Tour ride was without doubt for me the best yet!

4.Goodbye Footscray, hello Footscray

Jodie Burton and her boyfriend Tom Hudson are planning to cycle 20,000 kilometres from Footscray Rugby Club in London to Footscray Rugby Club in Melbourne for charity.

5.Voices raised for cancer awareness

Headwinds and heat did not stop the 80 men, women and children who rode in the 160km Community Challenge Tour as part of the Cancer Voices SA team. The ride, a popular element in the hugely successful Tour Down Under, attracted a field of more than 8000 cyclists.

6.A year of milestones

As I write 2009 is thundering to a close and the New Year, and indeed a new decade, loom ahead. It is fitting to wish all readers the very best for 2010 and beyond, and it is also perhaps a good time to reflect on some landmarks of the past 12 months.

7.Congratulations on 20 years of progress

What a privilege it is to be able to reflect on 20 years of bike riding progress with Australian Cyclist magazine - a big thank you to all our readers for your support. I hope you enjoy this issue, which looks at the past 20 years from the many angles of the bike riding world.

8.The value of participation

I write this column in recovery mode from an extended period of sleep deprivation courtesy of SBS late-night Tour de France coverage. As I reflect on the images and my memories of the tour, what really stands out for me is the fun that Lance Armstrong appeared to be having throughout the Tour. Sure, on many days he was clearly suffering as much as some of his fellow riders, but having written himself into the record books four years ago, he made a decision to get back in training and put his body through all that pain so he could participate.

9.Engaging the community

As I write it is a beautiful day in Sydney, and I have been lucky enough to get out on the bike already. I left home soon after dawn for a 30-minute ride across town to join the Marrickville "bike bus", a daily bike commuter service organised by volunteers for the Marrickville and South Sydney Bicycle User Group (BUG). Today we headed into the CBD for a breakfast hosted by the City of Sydney to celebrate World Environment Day.

10.New ways to Gear Up

The boss is away this month so I have stepped up to share some thoughts of my own with readers. Having been at Bicycle NSW for a little over two years now, having the chance to write this column gave me pause for reflection over the distance we have travelled in that time and what parts of my job I have found most rewarding. It's surprisingly difficult really because, although this job like any other has its ups and downs, the truth to me is that the community benefits of bike riding are so positive I feel excited and rewarded every day I come to work (but don't tell the boss that).
