Think integrated public transport system, convenience, practicality and security. Now think of changing plans, social or otherwise, and the inconvenience of having to lug your bicycle around with you and the constant worry that someone might nick it. Think of drastically changing weather conditions and the option of needing to find alternative transport.

I tend to get nervy seeing bikes with a child perched behind the rider. It's not just the fact the bike is travelling at 20, 30 or 40 kilometres an hour that seems so perilous, but that it is such a distance for the oblivious little pillion to fall in the event of an accident. Bicycling kids is a risky activity, but there will always be a market for it

If you are like me and commute regularly on your bike, then the chances are that you are always looking for a little more speed, but you are not willing to give up too much on the comfort side of the equation. Flat-bar road bikes are becoming very popular with commuters who want to avoid spending too long hunched over in that aerodynamically blissful, but somewhat uncomfortable, racing position during their daily grind to the office.

How am I going to explain this? When Paul from Gazelle dropped off the Fuente Plus ($1759) commuter bike he'd been using as his personal transport for several months for us to try I just didn't know where to start.

With the number of companies offering 29" Mountain Bikes in their line up or offering components it is obvious that the 29er concept is here to stay and will probably even create a niche market of its own. We had a quick ride of the Avanti KISS 29 a few issues ago in our single-speed special but the Scratch 29 has a much broader appeal. We thought it time to see if bigger wheels make that much of a difference.
