1.LETTER OF THE MONTH

Much has been written over recent times, especially in the Sydney press, regarding the necessity for cyclists to wear helmets. I've always been a helmet wearer and a strong proponent of them. This month I was the victim of a road rage attack, in which I was assaulted by a motorist while I was stationar

2.Wake up and share

I would like to support M. Steen (AC, Jan/Feb) on speeding cyclists on shared pathways.

On visits to Melbourne, as a cyclist I have come across walkers and always slow as I approach. In many cases I find the walker/s seem to wander everywhere I wish to ride and mostly I discover wires hanging out of their heads.

3.Follow the rules

As a relatively new reader of your magazine I apologise if this point has been raised before, but it seems to me that if cyclists expect other road users to give way we should reciprocate by following the road rules. In the midst of the Tour Down Under I was very disappointed to see an amateur team sail through a red light.

4.Courtesy first

I disagree with the editor ("Crowded out", AC, Nov/Dec,). It is NOT vitally important that our roads include separated bicycle infrastructure with room for cyclists to ride safely.

5.Lost opportunity

We need to make our streets more cyclist-friendly. Overseas, cycling is an effective means of transport and recreation. Cyclists in Europe and Asia can safely pedal to work. That is not the case in Australia.

6.Good news ...

I thought you might like a positive story. Dubbo Bicycle User Group put a submission to the Dubbo Council several years ago for a rail trail which would utilise the disused railway line that runs from Dubbo to Molong. We haven't got far with that, but we have been successful with the extending of the wonderful Tracker Riley Cycleway, which was built in 1996.

7.... and not so good

I have been a cyclist for about 20 years, including times as a courier in London. Then I stopped. Why? I moved to Australia, specifically Sydney and Brisbane. I really want to cycle again, but have no incentive.

8.Frame materials

In his letter ‘Chromoly strengths' (AC Nov/Dec), Mark Leftly seems to have price/quality/value confused. The fact that the lowest-priced frames, in the context of assembled road bikes, tend to be built with chromoly, should not be taken as a reflection on the qualities of chromoly; nor should it be assumed that all chromoly frames are cheaper than all frames of other materials.

9.LETTER OF THE MONTH

About once a month on my daily commute to work I come across an escaped dog. At times I've stopped and tried to be friendly, but this has always resulted in a happy-to-be-liberated dog becoming snarly and aggressive.

10.Cost of commuting

The My Commute article (AC, Jul/Aug) claims that cycling costs the rider "35 cents a kilometre", and advises that it is cheaper to take a train. There must be some mistake.
